Rabiner's Hotel: A Family Business
Jake Greenberg's great-grandparents, Anne and Moe Rabiner, opened up Rabiner's Hotel on Lac-des-Sables in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts. It became a popular holiday destination for Jewish Montrealers. Jake's grandparents, Faigie Rabiner and Frank Greenberg, took over the hotel in the 70's and ran it until Rabiner's Hotel closed its doors in 1988.
Zaidies at Rabiner's Hotel
Leslie Greenberg, Jake's father, started a restaurant with his brother Nelson at their grandparents' hotel. They called it Zaidies. They served all their favourite meals from their childhood, and perfected the family recipe for the perfect smoked salmon (lox).
Waxman's: The Other Family Business
While Jake's father's family was busy running a hotel and restaurant, Jake's mother's side was busy running their own family business: Waxman House. Founded in 1927 by Wolf "Willi" Waxman, Waxman's is Montreal's preeminent tuxedo shop and espresso bar. In the 2010s, Jake worked for his uncle Billy Waxman at the shop, where the two of them perfected the family recipe for the perfect shot of espresso.
Zaidies Reborn
When the pandemic hit, Jake decided to bring the spirit of Zaidies back to life. His dad taught him the old family recipe for the perfect smoked salmon, and Jake got to work in his parents' garage smoking and slicing and delivering salmon to hungry customers all across town. It was a hit!
A New Beginning
Somewhere in Mile End, Mr. Daniel Feinglos was sitting down with some friends for dinner, fretting about the fading Jewish culture of Mile End. Once the centre of Jewish life in Canada, Mile End hardly had any Jewish insitutions left! His friends offered him some of the Zaidies lox they had just got. He took one bite of Zaidies' smoked salmon, and in an instant, an idea was formed: he was going to help this Zaidies guy open a new Jewish restaurant in Mile End. Together, they were going to bring the Jewish soul back to Mile End. So he found Jake, they took over the site of a closed-down restaurant, and they got to work. In January 2025, Chez Greenberg opened its doors on Park Av. for the first time.
Chez Greenberg: Welcome Home

We're still here, still family-run, and serving up the next generation. So come on down, order at the front, then grab a seat and relax. Our space is your space. Welcome home.
